THE ROMULAN WAR: Project Deploy
In response to the Xindi attack on Earth in 2153, Starfleet Command recalled 47 starships to Earth for upgrades and refits in preparation for a possible Xindi invasion that ultimately never came.
Dozens of aging Earth starships were modernized with faster engines, heavier weapons, and other improvements which helped Starfleet mount a defense against the Romulans two and a half years later.

The Einstein-class light cruiser was among the wave of “half-saucer” designs spurred on by the NX Project in the early 2140’s. Looking forward to the Yorktown carriers&Minotaur warp fighter/bombers class ships from the Starfleet Museum website. I can see the NX class carry several Minotaur class docked on its hull. When it installs the secondary hull, it can then carry over a dozen of the Minotaurs on it. Maybe Starfleet sent the Enterprise back to the automated shipyard that it encountered earlier to see if they can recover some of the technology on it. Note that the Andorians did get detailed scans of the Xindi weapon. While they can't exactly reproduce it, they can learn from it to improvise their weapons. Also why didn't the Andorians deploy their attack drones to specifically target the Marauders by direct ramming or proximity explosions to damage it so that it can easily be targeted.

Heh, the idea that the Kzinti were the first to face earth before the Romulans was a bit of a surprise. Perhaps it shouldn't be, as the Kzinti never made much of an appearance. Although I'm surprised that earth wasn't better prepared militarily what with an early wakeup call like this? Well, the threat was easily handled--and perhaps Starfleet existed with as much military setting as it does in this era due to the Kzinti -- and other pirates. It might have taken years for that Delta taskforce to reach the Kzinti homeworld, and many years for the Kzinti to send ships out as far as earth. Albeit, the Kzinti might have functioned in a feudal manner in their operations if limited to basic warp for a long time? Such an example might have further compelled earth to remain unified and slow down colonization, and maintain good relations with its colonies? One might speculate that the Deltas were THE common Starfleet patrol ship for quite some years. Enough of them being built so as that earth as the baby spacefaring civ could operate on swarm tactics should earth be threatened? Three might have been enough surplus of these Deltas that they HAD to used and upgraded for the Romulan War. Especially if they could be upgraded. I do have question the ability to put a warp 5 capable manifold into a Delta? Granted, a smaller engine for a smaller ship. I suppose it's possible that the Deltas might have still used fusion reactors when they first came out? Maybe the impulse engines get pulled out and upgrades to the engine can be done without interfering with the rest of the hull? Anyway, I always figured that these ships were fated to mostly defense of systems or stations, or convoys of slower moving freighters, its interesting that you've got them moving at warp 5. Quite a change in not so many years from the ENTERPRISE series when the NX-01 was the only earth ship able to go warp 5. The show DID kind of, sort of suggest that earth had a surprisingly large space navy, but that its ships were too slow to be of any help.

I love this Intrepid class, love as in that it does everything that it should represent. It LOOKS like what an early space faring civilization would build as a first attempt at a warship. The nacelles are huge, they're close to the hull to provide as small an area to be warped as possible, even if it looks like they might be irradiating crewmembers. For that matter, fins being used to radiate heat. It's a mighty and noble attempt to produce a cruiser to defend earth and its space-ways. Useful against pirates, but is a little too small, too slow, too underarmed and underpowered to really be taken seriously by other players. And for all of that, I love it. It fits the era perfectly.

Okay. Its time for me to explain a few points as to why I think that this is not as amazing as many seem to think it is. Hmm.. Well, now that people are paying attention. Let this collective dragging begin. This story is good. But it lacks in a couple of places. Please allow me to explain, as in read all of this before you post comments and responses. Logistics: Time is one example. An army marches on its stomach after all. These guys gotta be fed and provisioned. They can't be away from home for long periods of time. It gets worse when one factors in that the Romulan nation-state is an imperialist state. They need their fleet to provide internal security as well. For the Romulans, it's really stupid as elements of their fleet is months away from home. While their ships might be faster and better than humanity's. They are still quite slow by my standards, which is late TNG trek speed limits of about two light years an hour. Keep in mind that this is set in Archer's time. Not Sisko's time... It's three weeks to get to Alpha Centauri. Not six hours as one would be used to in late TNG. Distance from Home: Distance is another one. For the Romulans, their ships are away from home. Any battle damage would become a force multiplier. They have nowhere to repair their ships. They also have nowhere to treat their injuries for their men who would inevitably sustain injuries in battle. Also, see my earlier point regarding three weeks to Alpha Centauri. Thats our closest star and some of the other locations are dozens of light years away. So, distance works for humanity, not the Romulans. They would be fighting where humanity and its allies are strong. The Conduct of the War and its After Effects: The nature of combat. Okay, here we go. Yes yes. I can hear the responses that 'its war, get of it.' The Romulans more or less tried to exterminate humanity. Down to the last child. It was even predicted that we would be forced to surrender by 2160 at the latest. Then we somehow manage to eke out a victory at Cheron. Then humanity is cool after that... Nobody wants revenge of any kind ever again?. Except Lieutenant Styles who's almost universally dismissed as a bigot and a racist. The fact that the Romulans didn't know what 'peace' meant tells me there is a VERY serious cultural issue with the Romulans. It also tells me that they are closed-minded, arrogant and egotistical. Among a whole pile of other issues in there too. They used nukes from orbit. They attacked civilian stations and colony sites. They also destroyed the Nightingale with a nuke, citing it as an act of mercy. "If you are not strong enough to serve. You do not deserve to exist." I believe was more or less what the Romulan commander said after the attack. The Romulans were known for being brutal, and exceptionally warlike and as such, they were feared and they were hated. They committed some very ugly atrocities during the war. Some were mentioned in Star Trek Cannon and some weren't. Some were educated guesswork and some are fan interpretations. But needless to say. The Romulans did some very nasty things during the war. Then the war ended with no closure and no ending. Then the Romulans spent another two hundred years being downright nasty to the Alpha Quadrant. Making a LOT of enemies as they went. They also added to the inter-generational trauma they inflicted on humanity during the first war with them. Casualties and Losses: Earth Starfleet's losses were almost their entire fleet. Especially, the older ships that couldn't run away from foes that outmatched them or outfight those they could not outrun. Maybe one ship out of every five survived the war. We know that of the first seven NX' class ships. Humanity lost six of those and Enterprise got so badly trashed that she ended up leaving service soon after the end of the war. The Daedalus class also suffered horribly during the war with at least sixty percent of them not surviving the war. Anything smaller or older stood less of a chance on the field. The Yorktown's were shown here to be the ones who turned the war around. Ultimately when it came time to win after Cheron. Humanity tapped out of the push into Romulan space as the fighting had bled their fleet to death. This story showcases that they simply had nothing left to fight with. Thats why the two sides negotiated via subspace radio. However, the end to one war does n ot signal the end to all wars. The Romulans were allowed to continue being assholes to humanity and the Federation. Until at least 2385. Consequences and effects: Romulan history has been one of arrogant aggression against all of their neighbours. Until at least 2385. Then along comes one event that changed everything. I'm not talking about the Dominion War. They only joined that because they were manipulated into it. I'm talking about Hobus. Now the Romulan Empire has been laid low, and their pride and arrogance have been trammelled into the dust of history. The Romulans sought assistance from the Federation. Then Mars was destroyed. The Federation walked away from helping the Romulans. Funny how that works, isn't it.? The wheel turns, does it not?. The Romulans honestly deserved what they got here. Hey, before you tell me otherwise. Would they have lifted a finger to help the Federation or humanity had the situation been reversed. ? No. You all know it too. So, don't bother me otherwise.

Thanks for the detailed post... here's our thoughts: *Logistics* The Romulans are away from home for long periods of time. But as we mention here (and this will be explored more in The Romulan War Part 2).. the Romulans are in fact, on an expedition. They are searching for something and that search takes them to planets that the humans have planted their flag on. Because they are militaristic and because they believe the humans are trying to bring stability to a region of space that they prefer to be in chaos, the Romulans aggressively provoke the humans in order to continue their search and to simultaneously disrupt the humans' diplomatic progress across the region. *Distance from home* Repairing Romulan ships is of little consequence as so far, the humans have been largely unable to damage or destroy Romulan vessels. The Romulans' agenda, as well as their homeworld's location, must remain secret at all costs so when one of their ships is irreparably damaged, they self-destruct. Also, the Romulan carrier ships are in fact, giant mobile bases that are equipped to do most major repairs should the need arise. It is worth mentioning that the Romulans DO, in fact, have forward operating bases in and around Coalition space... but the Coalition simply doesn't know where those bases are. They have no intelligence on their enemy, no prisoners to interrogate, and no debris to sift through for clues. And remember, space is BIG and the Romulans do possess primitive cloaking technology, making finding them even harder than it already is. *The Conduct of the War and its After Effects* Earth BELIEVES the Romulans want to exterminate them for two reasons: 1) The Romulans have not made any demands of them. 2) The Romulans massacred over a half-million on Alpha Centauri (which was mainly done as a show of force to persuade the humans to withdraw from the other planets the Romulans had plans to search). Simply put, the Romulans believe they are a superior breed and do not have to negotiate with humans. To them, brute force and intimidation speaks for itself and the expectation is that the humans will cower before the Romulans, believing them to be an existential threat, and move aside so they can move unimpeded across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. This has been the modus operandi of the Romulans in the past with other races along their other borders and this has (nearly) always worked for them. As for "getting revenge" after routing the Romulans at Cheron... well, we explore that in Part 2 and I don't want to give any spoilers quite yet, but think about whether Starfleet is actually in a position to follow through on getting revenge even if they wanted it. We also know there is a treaty, so consider whether Earth would throw that treaty away after having just formed a Federation which will continue to seek new members for the next few centuries. Credibility matters, especially when Earth is the de facto capital of the new UFP. It's also worth pondering (again keeping this spoiler-free)... are you SURE Earth didn't get in a few good licks before (and at) Cheron before the treaty was signed? Food for thought. *Casualties and Losses* Your assessment is pretty spot-on here. Part 2 of our story will show how the Romulans failed to rout Earth's inferior navy, which had less to do with the Romulans' military capabilities than with the political events occurring on both sides in the later years of the conflict. *Consequences and Effects* Again, your observations are on point here. And for the record... no, we do not think the Romulans would have helped the Federation if the situation were reversed, though whether the Romulans "deserved" an extinction-level event like Hobus is debatable, even considering how poorly they'd conducted themselves. In any case, thanks for your thoughts and we hope you enjoy Part 2 when it is released!
